Home Away From Home

New Westminster (Glenbrook)

Homestay in New Westminster, Canada

Hello and Welcome to the Fisher / Patel Home!

I’m so excited to introduce myself to you. My name is Angela, my husband is named Kal, and our son is Niyan Patel. Our son was born in 2014. People welcome students into their homes for various reasons. We welcome students into our home because we honestly love being a host family. We are a warm family and we have a lot to give. We feel so fortunate to be a host family and we have many past students who we still keep in contact with. If you are wanting a family away from home we are just the people for you. We are so excited to have you join our family. I really hope you love your time here in the Vancouver area because it’s such an exciting opportunity for you.

Our son Niyan:
My son Niyan is full of smiles, energy and is active. He is usually a bit rambunctious and excited when he first meets our new students, so no need to worry as he won’t be shy. We really like it when our son spends time with people from other cultures so we welcome you to get to know him. He will make you laugh a lot and he will warm your heart.

Our dog Kona:
We have a dog named Kona. She is an absolute love-bug. She’s extremely clean, kind and affectionate. She never barks, never jumps on people and is a horrible dog for security lol. Good thing we live in very safe area and don’t need a security dog because she would be fired.

Family home & location:
Our family home is located in a very central accessible area of Vancouver. We live in the city of New Westminster. It is a city that is a right beside Burnaby and it is a bit east of Vancouver. We live in a beautiful, brand new, modern, very clean, 5-bedroom house. We live on a quiet and safe, family oriented street. Our home is within walking distance to transit, shops, restaurants, grocery stores, and beautiful parks. From our home there is easy access to downtown Vancouver via the Expo Line Skytrain.

Activities/Hobbies:
My husband works full time and currently I am taking a break from work. Our son Niyan goes to school. We are an active social, healthy, happy family. We like to joke around and have many laughs. In the evenings after work and school we mostly really enjoy spending time together. We often go to parks, play sports, play family games or watch movies. With previous students we have had many fun adventures together. We are very inclusive and you are always welcome to join in on our family adventures. With our previous students we have enjoyed activities together such as walks, park visits, swimming, camping, snow sledding, skating, shopping, beach time, etc. We can’t wait to include you in on our next adventures.
Before our son was born we travelled a lot because we genuinely love to learn about new cultures. We have been lucky enough to have visited places in Europe, Africa, Asia, Mexico, Caribbean and the United States. We can’t really travel the same way we use to so we hope by welcoming international students to our home we can still learn about different people and cultures.

Food:
We like to eat a variety of foods and would prefer to host someone who has an open-mind about food since we feel eating different foods is part of the experience of visiting another country. We eat healthy and we enjoy a lot of fresh fruits, vegetables and salads. We can cater to vegetarians and lactose free diets if needed. We eat a lot of delicious vegetarian meals as well as fish, and white meat. We as well occasionally eat Indian food. Lastly, our only restriction is that we don’t serve red meat in our home. We are probably typically “North American” in our food choices for lunches and our lunches often include sandwiches. The students are responsible for making their own breakfast and lunches. We offer a variety of yummy choices.

Routine:
We are a family that wakes up early and we generally go to bed early. We have this routine as we are typical parents of a young boy. We have a large house, a very large beautiful patio with a fireplace and a BBQ. We also have a large yard with a swing and a trampoline. We encourage our students to enjoy everything our home has to offer. If you want to join in on the family fun you are always welcome. If you want alone quite time we also respect that and we have space for it too. We have a separate room with TV and we often watch movies there as a family. This TV room is also open to you and if you to want to enjoy quite alone TV time there you are free to do so.
We really enjoy spending time with people we love and we are lucky to know people from all ethnicities and cultures. When we can, we love to socialize. In Canada we are blessed with people from many cultures. If you come to our home you will truly have a “Canadian” experience with all the unique people we are close with. As well, almost everyone we know has kids and it makes things even more fun as a result.
To help you get to know us even more I have attached a few pictures. I hope this letter helps you understand our family a bit more and we really look forward to welcoming you soon.
